Teresa Dixon

Singer Songwriter

Biography

From one side of Bass Strait to the other Teresa Dixon is an Australian singer songwriter with the earth in her veins. With a warm, honest voice likened to ‘gravel and honey’, Dixon writes and performs with integrity and grit; never afraid to delve into deepest depths of the human condition.

Growing up by Port Philip Bay in the outer suburbs of Melbourne, music became the means by which Teresa’s personal story found its feet. In her 20’s she moved to the inner-city suburbs of Melbourne, picked up a guitar and began writing songs to process childhood trauma and mental health issues. She soon became a regular contributor to Melbourne’s vibrant music scene, gaining invaluable experience as a solo performer, playing gigs in the numerous bars and venues across the city for many years. In 2010 she was a founding member and songwriter of trad country folk trio The Little Sisters, who played regularly in Melbourne and regional Victoria, eventually touring and playing nationally at many of the country’s major folk festivals. In 2012 she relocated south to Phillip Island in regional Victoria, and worked as a professional solo musician, gaining a reputation as a solid performer and songwriter playing regularly at venues around the Bass Coast and afar. At this time, she also teamed up with folk musician Samara Cullen and formed the Stragglers, who went on to tour and perform at folk festivals across the country, including a tour from Melbourne to Darwin in her trusty old 1990 Corolla wagon.

In 2017 Dixon got stuck in Tasmania with said broken-down corolla while on tour with the Stragglers. She fell deeply in love with the state’s natural beauty and laid-back people and hasn’t left since. In 2018 she completed and released her debut album Bass Strait, written and recorded in her previous home on the Bass Coast of Victoria. She now has her roots firmly grounded further south in the Huon Valley, Tasmania.

Dixon’s latest studio album Way Down South was co-produced and recorded by Jethro Pickett in his studio on the Huon River in Tasmania’s deep south. With many of the songs written in a rustic old apple pickers hut in the Huon Valley during the coronavirus pandemic, the album is embedded physically and emotionally in the area, during a time of isolation and disconnection. The album deals with themes of grief, trauma, isolation and addiction and documents Dixon’s emotions, self-reflections and journey to healing, with an underlying message of light and hope.

As a performer, Dixon’s truth and sincerity resonates with audience members across the country. She has toured nationally and played in most major cities in Australia and has played many of the nation’s major folk festivals and venues as a soloist, and as performer and songwriter in trad country-folk trios The Little Sisters and The Stragglers, as well as convict folk punk outfit The Dead Maggies. She has appeared with her band Teresa Dixon and The Deep Blue Sea at The Huon Valley Mid-Winter Festival, Dark Mofo, Pangaea, Cygnet Folk Festival, HOBOFOPO and St Alban’s Folk Festival (NSW). Dixon has supported many of Australia’s premier artists such as CW Stoneking, The Black Sorrows, Mia Dyson, Lee Kernaghan and Mick Thomas.
